Member Expert: The Market Has Shifted: What Small Businesses Need to Know About Modern Marketing

I have spent more than 30 years in the television and advertising industry, beginning my career as a journalist before moving into sales and marketing strategy. I also grew up in a family of entrepreneurs and started selling storm windows and doors when I was just 10. That early experience taught me something I still carry with me today: local businesses work hard for every customer, every sale, and every opportunity to grow.

That is why I believe it is so important for small business owners to understand how quickly the marketing landscape is changing.

The way consumers search, shop, and connect with businesses is evolving. Artificial intelligence, social media, video content, and streaming platforms are reshaping the customer journey. Marketing strategies that worked even a few years ago may not be enough to reach today’s customers.

More consumers are finding answers without ever clicking through to a website. Younger audiences are often using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other video-based channels to search for products, services, and recommendations before turning to traditional search engines.

For small businesses, this creates both challenges and opportunities. Customers may encounter your business many times before deciding to make a purchase, schedule a service, or request more information. Those touchpoints can happen across search engines, social media, websites, streaming content, online reviews, videos, and digital ads.

Another challenge is that many website visitors remain anonymous. Even when someone visits your site, they may leave without calling, filling out a form, or making a purchase. That means businesses need to think beyond a single visit and focus on building awareness, trust, and an ongoing connection.

Modern marketing is no longer about relying on a single platform or message. It requires consistent branding, strong storytelling, video content, audience targeting, social media engagement, and data-driven follow-up.

This June, I invite small business owners in Savannah and Bluffton to join me for an educational seminar focused on these changes and what they mean for your business. We will discuss how artificial intelligence, search trends, video, and digital tools are changing the way businesses connect with consumers—and how you can adapt your marketing strategy to compete in today’s marketplace.

The Savannah seminar will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the WSAV studios on East Victory Drive in Savannah, Georgia. The Bluffton seminar will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the Culinary Institute of the South at TCL in Bluffton, South Carolina. Both seminars will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., with a box lunch available afterward.

The market has shifted, and thanks to my partnership with WSAV, this is your opportunity to learn, adapt, and strengthen your marketing for the future.
