The Visit Savannah Visitor Information Center team recently embarked on a captivating journey through Savannah’s Jewish heritage with a private tour of the historic Mickve Israel Synagogue. Organized by Deanna Sorrells, the outing featured a richly detailed presentation and guided exploration led by synagogue docent Ellen Gerber.
Ellen’s engaging narrative highlighted Mickve Israel’s status as the third‑oldest synagogue in the United States and the very first to be built in Georgia. Staff members learned how, in 1733, a small group of Jewish immigrants established the congregation, overcoming early challenges to forge a lasting community. The tour also included a visit to the on‑site museum, where artifacts and archives trace the congregation’s evolution from its colonial beginnings to its vibrant role in Savannah today.
By deepening their understanding of this landmark’s storied past, the Visitor Information Center team is better equipped to share Savannah’s diverse cultural tapestry with every guest they serve. Experiences like this strengthen their storytelling skills and ensure that each visitor leaves with a richer appreciation for the city’s unique history.
