Visit Savannah Celebrates 50 Years

When Interstate 95 was completed in the mid-1970s, community leaders recognized both a challenge and an opportunity. Thousands of travelers were passing by Savannah each day—but without a dedicated marketing effort, many would continue on without ever experiencing our city.

In 1976, that opportunity became action with the creation of the Savannah Convention & Visitors Bureau, now known as Visit Savannah. Its mission was clear: tell Savannah’s story and invite travelers to exit the highway and discover the history, hospitality, and charm waiting just minutes away.

The impact has been transformational.

In 1977, Savannah welcomed approximately 1.7 million visitors annually. Today, that number has grown to an estimated 12.9 million visitors in 2024. What was once described as “the South’s best-kept secret” has become one of the nation’s most celebrated destinations.

Tourism now generates an estimated $4 billion in annual visitor spending and supports approximately 27,000 jobs across the region—fueling small businesses, restaurants, attractions, hotels, and countless local entrepreneurs. Beyond its economic impact, the visitor economy enhances residents’ quality of life by supporting infrastructure, cultural institutions, and community amenities.

For the past 20 years, Joseph Marinelli, president and CEO of Visit Savannah, has helped guide the organization’s strategic growth.

“For five decades, Visit Savannah has worked to tell our city’s story in a way that honors our history while driving meaningful economic opportunity,” said Marinelli. “What began as an effort to encourage travelers to take the exit off I-95 has evolved into a sophisticated, global marketing strategy that supports local businesses, creates jobs, and strengthens our entire community. The success we celebrate today is the result of long-term vision, strong partnerships, and a shared belief in Savannah’s future.”

Now in its 50th year, Visit Savannah continues to build on the vision first established in 1976—ensuring that when travelers pass by on I-95, they don’t just drive through Coastal Georgia… they stop, stay, and experience Savannah.
