Georgia Department of Transportation contractors will begin intermittent single-lane closures on the U.S. 17/S.R. 404 Spur Bridge, commonly known as the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, beginning Thursday, Sept. 10, through Friday, Sept. 25.

The weekday closures will take place between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. and will affect only one direction of travel — northbound or southbound — at a time. At least one lane will remain open to traffic throughout the work.

The temporary closures will allow crews to conduct surveys and inspections in preparation for cable replacement work expected to begin later this year.

Motorists should expect periodic delays, allow extra travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible. Drivers are also encouraged to remain alert for changing traffic patterns, workers, and construction equipment.

The work is part of Georgia DOT’s larger U.S. 17/S.R. 404 Spur Bridge Major Maintenance Project, which will replace the bridge’s existing cables, bearings, and joints. The project will also explore shortening the cables to reprofile the bridge, potentially increasing vertical clearance and improving navigation for ships through the channel.
