Under Secretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs Visits Savannah Today

Today, the Savannah Area Chamber is welcoming Dr. Mark Doms, under secretary of commerce for economic affairs, to our community. During his visit, Doms will recognize Savannah as one of two cities in the country that will serve as test communities for gathering census information electronically. The census, which has always been executed on paper in the past, will reflect applications learned through the trial of this method in Savannah the next time census data is collected. During his visit, Doms will take a tour of the port to see the large economic driver and will meet with several business and community leaders at America’s Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia.
Doms was sworn in as the 11th under secretary of commerce for economic affairs on Jan. 3, 2013. He serves as a top economic advisor to the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and the Obama Administration. In the past, Doms served as the chief economist at the DOC and worked for many years at the Federal Reserve. The Savannah community is honored to have an economist so influential over government-connected business issues visiting today.
