SCCPSS Celebrates Literacy Week with Family Events and Community Programs

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts has declared literacy the “North Star” for the district, emphasizing that every child deserves the opportunity to pursue their greatest potential and a choice-filled life. Literacy, she notes, is the foundation for that opportunity.

To celebrate and reinforce this priority, SCCPSS will host its own Literacy Week, September 30–October 4, 2025. This week will feature various events and activities to engage students, families, and the community in supporting strong reading skills. The Savannah business community is encouraged to support Dr. Watts and SCCPSS on this critical initiative.

Tuesday, September 30 – Family Literacy Night
Every SCCPSS school will host a Family Literacy Night, during which families can engage in hands-on activities and take home practical literacy tips.

Friday, October 3 – LitTalks
Join us at Beach High School from 5–7 p.m. to hear inspiring stories from SCCPSS staff and students about their passion for literacy. Attendees will also receive practical tips for supporting literacy at home and work. [RSVP here].

Saturday, October 4 – Parent University
Spend the day learning how to be a stronger literacy supporter at home. Parent University will be held at the Davis-Edwards-Harris Complex from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., featuring workshops, service and resource organizations, and activities designed to empower families. Free lunch and childcare will be provided. No registration is required.
