Savannah State University is building momentum, and its progress matters to Savannah’s business community. At his Oct. 13 State of the University address, President Dr. Jermaine Whirl reflected on a year of strong results and partnerships while outlining an ambitious vision for SSU’s future. Jennifer Davenport, vice president of community affairs, attended on behalf of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce.
One workforce statistic stood out: 72% of SSU graduates are employed in Georgia one year after graduation. Helping more graduates build careers in our state is an opportunity to retain local talent and meet the region’s growing workforce needs.
Dr. Whirl also highlighted partnerships in education, engineering and public policy—including one connection that began at a Chamber board meeting. These relationships show how bringing business and university leaders together can turn conversation into opportunity.
Stronger ties between employers and SSU can help align students’ degrees and skills with workforce needs, creating clearer pathways from the classroom to careers in our region. The Chamber looks forward to strengthening these connections and helping more graduates build their futures here. SSU’s success is part of Savannah’s success.
