OpenAI, a global leader in artificial intelligence research and deployment, announced this week its intent to pursue Project Camellia, a proposed data infrastructure development in nearby Effingham County.

To answer questions, address community concerns, and discuss the project’s potential benefits, OpenAI will host a public open house on Thursday, July 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Effingham County College and Career Academy, located at 2940 GA Highway 21 in Rincon.

“We appreciate OpenAI’s willingness to hold an open house and share information about this project,” Savannah Area Chamber President & CEO Bert Brantley said. “I know many throughout our region will be interested in learning more about a project of this scale, including the jobs, investment, and economic opportunities it could bring to our area.”

The proposed project would represent one of the largest private capital investments in coastal Georgia’s history. According to information provided by the company, this investment in our region aligns with OpenAI’s broader initiative to expand the advanced computing infrastructure needed to support the next generation of artificial intelligence technologies while building meaningful partnerships with local communities.

In addition to the proposed $20 billion capital investment and related construction employment and spending, the project is expected to create approximately 400 long-term, high-quality jobs. Private investments such as this expand the local tax base, allowing local leaders to consider tax relief for residents, support infrastructure improvements, and strengthen the region’s ability to attract additional investment and innovation.

The company is also committing to support new and existing educational partnerships designed to prepare Effingham County students for in-demand careers in technology, engineering, skilled trades, cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, and other growing industries. These efforts would help ensure local students and workers can benefit from the region’s continued economic growth.
