New Savannah Chamber Connect Episode Explores OpenAI’s $20 Billion Project Camellia Investment

A new special episode of Savannah Chamber Connect takes listeners inside one of the largest economic development announcements in coastal Georgia’s history.

Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Bert Brantley sits down with Chris Lehane of OpenAI to discuss Project Camellia, the company’s planned $20 billion investment in Effingham County.

During the conversation, Lehane explains OpenAI’s role in advancing modern artificial intelligence and the widespread adoption of ChatGPT. He also discusses why coastal Georgia was selected for the transformational project, pointing to the region’s economic momentum, port-driven growth, strong education and workforce pipelines, and the availability of a properly zoned industrial site.

Lehane outlines the project’s anticipated economic impact, including the creation of 400 initial six-figure jobs. Employment connected to the project is expected to grow to more than 1,000 positions over time.

The investment could also create significant opportunities throughout the regional economy by supporting local suppliers, contractors and other businesses connected to the project’s development and ongoing operations.

In addition, OpenAI plans to make an $80 million community investment designed to address local priorities and generate long-term benefits for Effingham County and the surrounding region.

Tune in to this special episode of Savannah Chamber Connect to learn more about Project Camellia and what this historic investment could mean for coastal Georgia’s economy, workforce, and future.
