Leadership Savannah Explores Public and Private Education Landscape

Leadership Savannah’s April program day took a deep dive into one of the community’s most vital issues—education. The day began at Jenkins High School with a welcome from Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education President Roger Moss, who inspired participants with his candid reflections on student achievement, teacher retention, and the urgent need to reframe public perception of local schools.

Following a tour of Jenkins’ engineering program, participants heard an insightful overview from SCCPSS Chief Derrick Butler and then explored the wide range of local education options through panels featuring leaders from private institutions like Hancock Day School and St. Andrew’s, as well as charter models like Savannah Classical Academy and Tybee Island Maritime Academy.

A highlight of the afternoon was the visit to Savannah Classical Academy, where the group saw firsthand how charter and private partnerships can support student success. Another standout moment was lunch—graciously prepared and served by the talented culinary arts students at Woodville-Tompkins Technical and Career High School—followed by a thoughtful discussion with Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts on the district’s vision and the road ahead for public education in Chatham County.

Special thanks to Stacy Jennings and Dr. Joe Buck for curating a full and thought-provoking day. From elementary to high school, traditional to charter, the April program gave participants a clearer understanding of Savannah’s evolving educational ecosystem—and the leaders working tirelessly to shape it.
