Leadership Savannah Explores Local Government in Action Across the County

The Leadership Savannah Class of 2025 hit the road in June for a full day dedicated to understanding the inner workings of local government—across city, county, and municipal lines.

The day kicked off with an engaging panel featuring members of the local delegation: Chairman Ron Stephens, Representative Edna Jackson, Representative Anne Allen Westbrook, and Senator Derek Mallow. The conversation focused on the importance of state-local collaboration as well as the realities of life during the legislative session.

While visiting Port Wentworth City Hall, the class explored the rapidly growing west side of Chatham County. Leaders including Mayor Karen Williams of Pooler, Port Wentworth Mayor Pro Temp Gabrielle Nelson, and Port Wentworth City Manager Steve Davis shared insights on growth, infrastructure, and the unique challenges of managing expanding communities.

The group then headed to the County Commission chambers, where Chairman Chester Ellis welcomed the class, followed by a panel of city and county managers from Savannah, Chatham County, and Pooler. The conversation highlighted cooperation and the shared responsibility of public service.

The day wrapped up in Thunderbolt, where the class learned more about governance in smaller municipalities. Special thanks to Tubby’s Tank House for hosting a relaxed and scenic happy hour to close out a content-rich and community-focused day.

From big cities to small towns, Leadership Savannah continues to foster a deeper understanding of the people, policies, and partnerships that shape our region.
