Leadership Savannah Explores Justice System in Law & Order Program

After a delayed start due to the cancellation of an out-of-town retreat caused by winter weather, the Leadership Savannah Class of 2024 officially kicked off its year with an in-depth exploration of the local justice system. The Law & Order program gave class members a behind-the-scenes look at public safety and the courts.

The day began with a tour of the Chatham County Detention Center, where Sheriff Richard Coleman shared insights into jail operations and the challenges facing law enforcement. Following the tour, class members discussed over lunch with Savannah Police Chief Lenny Gunther (Class of 2017), Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley (Class of 2020), and Counter Narcotics Team Director Michael Sarhatt. The conversation offered valuable perspectives on crime prevention, regional collaboration, and current public safety initiatives.

The class visited the newly completed Chatham County Trial Court Building in the afternoon. Judges Tim Walmsley (Class of 2006), Elizabeth Coolidge (Class of 2017), Tom Cole (Class of 2002), and Joe Hoffman (Class of 2025) shared their experiences and perspectives on the judicial process, offering a deeper understanding of the legal system in action.

Leadership Savannah thanks Judge Greg Sapp (Class of 2009) and Leadership Savannah board members for organizing an insightful and engaging program. The day gave class members a greater appreciation of the county’s law enforcement and judicial systems, highlighting the importance of collaboration in fostering a safe and just community.
