After extensive coordination, engagement, and advocacy, the Savannah City Council has passed an urban camping ordinance—marking an important step in the city’s efforts to address homelessness and promote public safety. The County passed a similar ordinance last month.
While not a silver bullet, this ordinance represents a necessary and balanced move to ensure our public spaces remain safe and accessible while encouraging individuals experiencing homelessness to seek available services. The policy was the product of months of hard work and collaboration between city officials, service providers, public safety agencies, and community leaders.
The Chamber was proud to play a role in that process, advocating for an approach that recognizes both the urgency of the issue and the need for compassion and dignity. It took strong leadership, thoughtful dialogue, and a shared commitment to progress to get this ordinance across the finish line.
We recognize this is just one piece of a much larger puzzle—but it is a meaningful and forward-moving piece. The Chamber will continue to work alongside our partners to support long-term, systemic solutions for homelessness in Savannah.
Thank you to all who contributed their time, insight, and energy to this effort. Together, we’re building a stronger, more connected community.
