The Chatham Education Alliance is inviting the community to be part of a bold new effort to transform educational outcomes across our region with the launch of the Chatham Literacy Moonshot — an ambitious initiative designed to achieve 95% of Chatham County third graders reading at grade level.
The Literacy Moonshot represents a powerful partnership among the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and faith-based communities, all united by the shared belief that third-grade reading proficiency is the single most important predictor of future academic success and lifelong opportunity.
The initiative will officially launch on Tuesday, March 10, from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. at Savannah State University’s King Frazer Student Center at 3219 College Street, where community leaders, educators, business partners, and advocates will gather to learn more about the initiative’s vision and how the community can get involved.
Built on a five-year, comprehensive strategy, the Chatham Literacy Moonshot focuses on eliminating the third-grade reading gap by aligning community partners around shared goals, measurable outcomes, and proven interventions. By working together, Moonshot leaders aim to ensure every child develops the foundational literacy skills critical for long-term academic success, workforce readiness, and a productive, fulfilling life.
Community members are encouraged to attend the launch event and become part of this community-wide commitment to strengthening Savannah’s future. When a community commits to literacy, it invests not only in education but also in economic mobility, workforce development, and opportunities for future generations.
