Congratulations to Reverend Thurmond Tillman and the congregation of First African Baptist Church on being awarded a $500,000 National Preservation Grant to support the continued preservation of one of Savannah’s most treasured historic landmarks.
This significant investment will help protect and preserve the church’s historic structure and ensure that its powerful legacy of faith, resilience, freedom and community continues to inspire future generations. As one of the nation’s most important historic congregations, First African Baptist Church holds a meaningful place in Savannah’s story and in American history.
Visit Savannah President and CEO Joseph Marinelli was on hand to deliver remarks during the celebration, recognizing the importance of preserving cultural landmarks that help tell the full and authentic story of our destination. Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Bert Brantley and Downtown Business Association representative Mia Mance also attended to congratulate Reverend Tillman and the congregation on this well-deserved honor.
The grant represents an important investment not only in the preservation of a historic building, but also in the continued stewardship of a sacred space that has served as a beacon of hope, strength and community for generations.
We celebrate Reverend Tillman, the congregation of First African Baptist Church and all those involved in this important preservation effort, and we look forward to seeing the lasting impact this investment will have for Savannah and beyond.
