Click to View November 7, 2012 SAVANNAH, GA -- New convention groups are opening up to Savannah thanks to the installation of an industrial-sized hangar door at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center.

The Airborne Law Enforcement Association will hold its 2016 convention in Savannah primarily because this newly completed door would allow for their planes and other large equipment to be displayed inside on the trade show floor. The group expects having 750 attendees booking 2,417 room nights in Savannah during the convention.

“Landing ALEA for 2016 has been a priority for us for about two years,” said Visit Savannah President Joseph Marinelli. “We knew that they liked Savannah, but the addition of the new industrial-sized door at the Trade Center gave us the competitive advantage and ultimately helped us to win this business.”

The new hangar door at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center is 45 feet wide by 27 feet tall. It's located at the northeast corner of Exhibit Hall B and is easily accessed from the center's main parking lot by a new concrete loading ramp. The door opens vertically, bi-fold or clamshell-style; and when secured is designed to withstand 175-mph winds.

“The Trade Center Authority Board immediately saw the value of their investment in the new, aircraft-hangar style entryway to the Center’s main Exhibit Hall,” said Bob Coffey, general manager of the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. “ALEA is one of many groups who can now look at Savannah and the Trade Center as an attractive option for industry trade shows needing inside accommodation for aircraft, as well as large farm and construction equipment.”

The door project was begun in August of 2012; and shortly after its October completion was used by U.S. Special Operations Command and the Rock ‘n' Roll Savannah Marathon and ½ Marathon events to load in their trade shows.

“We can now use groups like ALEA and the National Agricultural Aviation Association, better known to many as the ‘crop-dusters,’ as examples when we are talking with future prospects that are looking for buildings that can accommodate large equipment for their trade shows,” Marinelli said.
