Military Appreciation Luncheon | May 23
The Military Affairs Council will host its annual Military Appreciation Luncheon at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa May 23 at noon. Our keynote speaker will be Maj. Gen. Robert Abrams, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Stewart.

Gen. Abrams will be deploying late summer/early fall, heading back to the fight in the Middle East. He will touch on his assignment, mission(s), his view of the current military-political situation in both Iraq and Afghanistan and what he sees for the region in the near future — all of which impacts our nation.

This may be the final speaking engagement in Savannah that Gen. Abrams will be giving prior to his upcoming deployment, as his preparation tempo accelerates. As such, please make every effort to attend this important and informative luncheon. Just days before Memorial Day, this is our chance to demonstrate our admiration and appreciation for Gen. Abrams and for all military members — past and certainly present — and especially for those who’ve perished fighting for our continued sovereignty and freedom.

Tickets for this event will be $40 each and tables of 10 will be $400. Sponsors for this event are WTOC and Georgia Power. For more information, please call Margaret Mary Russell at 912.644.6432 or e-mail her at

SCCPSS Business to School Connections | June 1
The Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS), along with Gulfstream, invite you to join us on Friday, June 1 to learn about additional avenues of Business to School Connections.

The continued success of education is due in part to the strong community connection and support the school district has from local businesses. Your relationship with area schools will have great impact on student achievement and their work-ready or college-bound aspirations. Many of you already have an existing relationship with local schools; we want to hear about those and share additional, unique opportunities that will expand and strengthen your partnerships.

Gulfstream sponsors the Student Leadership Program (SLP) with SCCPSS high schools. This program may be suited for you or provide the opportunity to generate ideas that will fuel your own business connection in Savannah-Chatham Schools. SLP is a community initiative designed to equip students with tangible skills that will help them explore options beyond the classroom. The focus of the program is to reduce the high school dropout rate and inspire students to take control of their education.

Each year SLP selects approximately 150 new freshmen to join the four-year program. Students are paired with teachers and community advisors. This team sticks together all four years of high school. The community advisors are volunteers from businesses around the community who mentor the students throughout the year at planned SLP events.

We invite you to join us and learn how you too can make a difference in the betterment of public education and the success of our students! Many representatives from SCCPSS, Gulfstream and SLP will be on hand to answer questions and provide information. We look forward to seeing you!

You are also invited to attend the 4th Annual Student Leadership Awards and Year-End Celebration at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center on June 1st at 1 p.m. Come celebrate with the first graduating SLP class and hear Immaculee Ilibagiza tell of her survival of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
