Savannah State was established in 1890 and is the oldest public historically black college or university in the state. Twenty-three undergraduate degree programs are available through the colleges of sciences and technology, business administration and liberal arts and social sciences. SSU offers master's degrees in business administration, marine sciences, social work, urban studies and public administration. Specialized programs for non-traditional and evening students are available, as are continuing education courses. On this residential campus, housing options range from traditional residence halls to apartments with modern amenities.

The School of Pharmacy, one of only three in the state of Georgia, offers a three-year accelerated Doctor of Pharmacy program and attracts students from major universities throughout the United States.
